From a distance, face-to-face communication tends to be limited. ![]() Digital tools and social media have not changed the bedrock of communication: the human connection. By highlighting the vision and values of the company, the leader gets to reiterate what he or she stands for-thus building personal credibility-not to mention afford the opportunity for direct feedback from employees. Getting news directly from the horse’s mouth eliminates the potential for rumor or misinterpretation. The flipside to a leader’s visit is that it allows the leader to share strategic context with the rest of the organization. An onsite visit allows a leader to glean new information about personalities and relationships that one may never have received second hand, if at all. The cultural feel, situational contexts and office climate simply do not transmit through email or phone. There is no substitute for being present and just listening. However, there are four good reasons for onsite leadership visits:īuild Awareness. Don’t get me wrong, I love to travel, learn and explore new places, but coordinating geographically dispersed projects and attempting to cultivate relationships from afar-not to mention follow up on projects back home-can be yet another source of unwanted stress.
